Restore Porter No. 5

Our team conducted a comprehensive survey, which identified Porter No. 5 as the next steam engine to undergo a total refurbishment. The work to restore the engine will be comprehensive, including a complete boiler restoration, new tires, and a significant rebuild of the running gear. Both the railroad's in-house staff machinists and mechanics, as well as volunteer master machinists and laborers, will collaborate on the undertaking. Learn more about Porter No. 5…

Currently, Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad operates on just six miles of track between Elbe and Mineral. This project proposes restoration of 5.5 miles of track from Elbe to New Reliance (location of our RailCycle operations). Restoring this segment of track would allow us to do the following:

-For Whiskey, Wine, and Beer Trains, the entire event could be offered onboard in all weather.

-Allow for a joint Railroad/RailCycle package involving a train ride to

-Work towards our larger goal of restored rail service between Eatonville and Mineral. This work would put 1/3 of the out-of-service track we aim to restore back in service, a significant step  in the larger project and a catalyzing step in the process.

The infrastructure work involved in the project can all be conducted in house by Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad staff and skilled volunteers. The work is straight forward, consisting of tie replacement, additional ballast, significant tamping, ditching and brush cutting. The work would be conducted entirely on our right of way, requiring no permitting. By conducting work in house, we are able to lower costs, utilize skilled volunteers, and reclaimed materials, when available.

All donations to our 501(c)3 nonprofit organization are tax-deductible and will be used to restore Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad back to operation.
